Scanning the Internet for Lucy news since 1996DVDs, Finally! What can be said about Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, Vivian Vance, William Frawley et al on DVD? If that's what you're after, in the past few years companies have made up for the lack of Lucy on DVD in a big way, starting with the landmark series I Love Lucy. The entire show is finally available in one enormous boxed set, with a ton of extras that will have any fan salivating. Do some web surfing to find a price that's right for you.
Even better, most of Lucy's better known and best film performances are now out on DVD, both individually — The Facts of Life and Fancy Pants (both with Bob Hope), Yours, Mine and Ours (with Henry Fonda), Best Foot Forward (with Harry James, Nancy Walker and June Allyson) — and in special, fun sets like The Lucy & Desi Collection (Too Many Girls, The Long Long Trailer, and Forever Darling); and The Lucille Ball Film Collection (five films: Dance, Girl, Dance; The Big Street; DuBarry Was a Lady; Critic's Choice; and Mame).
Many of Desi Arnaz's and William Frawley's films are out on DVD as well; Vivian Vance only made a handful of films, of which The Great Race is currently out on DVD.
Lucy's other TV series are represented by box sets: The Lucy Show (several different collections offer 30 episodes on DVD; just be careful to note what episodes are featured on each so you're not buying duplicates); and Here's Lucy: Best-Loved Episodes from the Hit TV Series (a great collection put together with care by Lucie Arnaz). You can also find the occasional gem like the 1976 CBS special honoring Lucy's 25 years on television and the 2001 I Love Lucy 50th Anniversary TV Special — plus more eccentric, buyer-beware choices like Lucy's Lost Episodes or compilations of scenes from the star's 1950s and 1960s television work. Much of the latter are repetitive, grainy and in bad shape, so even though they're on DVD, choose wisely.
