Scanning the Internet for Lucy news since 1996
Comic ReliefThe 1950s and 1960s saw what was called the Golden Age of comics (some call it "late Golden Age," meaning the early 1950s) turn into what's popularly known now as the Silver Age (late 1950s through the 1960s). Though comics had been around since the turn of the century, something new came along in the late 1940s that would impact comics in a slight, but important way: television. 1950s television is the Golden Age of TV, and many of the popular shows - or, for example personalities, such as Bob Hope and Jerry Lewis - were given their own comic book series."I Love Lucy" was no exception, and its comic run was a long one; the I Love Lucy series was published by Dell from February 1954 through April/June 1962. In the early 1990s, Eternity Comics republished six of them (see picture), but I'm not sure if they reprinted entire issues or took stories from all over. Finally, comics based on The Lucy Show were published by Gold Key and had a much shorter run, one year, June 1963 to June 1964, and a total of only five issues. The latter group is fairly rare and hard to find; every once in a while one shows up on eBay. You're much more likely to discover one of the original I Love Lucy books, or the reprints of those.
The comics featured reasonably drawn facsimiles of Lucy, Ricky, Fred and Ethel, with Lucy (usually drawing Ethel in with her, as on the show) predictably getting into some kind of jam. For esxample, one story took Lucy and Ethel to Grauman's Chinese Theater, but instead of stealing John Wayne's footprints, as on the show, they ruptured the gas lines under the sidewalk and thought they'd struck oil! Perhaps not surprisingly, the characters of Lucy and her co-horts are well-suited to the comic medium, and the stories hold up nicely, especially if you're familiar with the gang from watching the show.
