WHAT'S NEW? THE LATEST ON LUCY
SPOTLIGHT ON: THE WEB SITE![]()
By now you've noticed the new look of this page.
In the past few months, I've been going through many
of the pages on the site, updating them, adding pictures
and more information, and generally trying to make the site
easier for you to navigate. To that end, I wanted
to make the home page a bit classier looking and
not so cluttered. This is the result. You can still
access all the features that have always been here — just
go the navigation bar under the date.
A short note on the background picture: it's one of
my all-time favorites of Lucy, blown up and Photoshopped,
taken from a Chicago newspaper in 1940 (left), as Desi Arnaz was
touring with the show Too Many Girls. There was speculation
that movie star Ball was having an affair with the handsome,
newly famous Cuban-born star (they had met filming the
Too Many Girls movie, in which Lucy had the female lead).
There's something about this picture, the wistful look on
Lucy's face and hand up near her chin, her (gorgeous) gams,
crossed, her costume, whether for a movie or publicity still,
that moved me when I first saw it, and continues to do so.
Enjoy the redesign!
THIS MONTH IN THE LUCYVERSE October 1, 1943: Desi Arnaz became a United States citizen. ...
Also on this date in 1954, CBS’ Toast of the Town (later
known as The Ed Sullivan Show) aired season eight, episode four,
in which Sullivan presented the Arnazes with the “Champions of
Show Business” plaque, paying tribute to their phenomenal TV
success. Sullivan turned his entire hour into a salute dedicated to
Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz; Vivian Vance and William Frawley
(I Love Lucy’s Ethel and Fred Mertz) performed a musical
number, and the second segment was a "roast" during which Desi,
who had taken the red-eye flight to New York — with
the flu and a 101° temperature — delivered a tearful "Thank you,
America" speech, noting that in no other country could a
success story like his happen, and how grateful he was. ...
